ROCKLEY FURNACE

The Rockley Furnace site consists of two upstanding structures located within a wooded earthwork landscape. The site and landscape are Scheduled Ancient Monuments.

This project was designed to 3D record the whole landscape and structures. The digital data would then be used for analysis and visualisation.

A complete laser scan survey was undertaken in the woods. The Leica C10 laser scanner was utilised for this task.

Scans were georeferenced with a Leica smartstaion and GPS unit

In addition to the laser scan survey the surviving furnace stack was recorded using convergence photogrammetry.

The resulting digital datasets were used to construct a digital interpretive model of the structure and the landscape.

SURVEY DATA

The Leica C10 laser scanner created a detailed pointcloud of the entire site, this data forms the basis of our digital modeling. The data was sliced to create a series of splines which would drive the shape of the landscape mesh.

HISTORIC MAPPING

The digital survey data was compared and combined with historic mapping and images to produce a base model for the visualisation.

ARCHAEOLOGY

Incorporating the archaeological record into the project was crucial when it came to understanding the workings of the structures and how they fit into the landscape.

Combining all of our knowledge about the site into a single 3D file allowed for the construction of a hypothesis on how this building may have functioned.

MECHANICS

Working within the boundaries of the archaeology the physical space of the structure and the technology available in the 18th Century I was able to create a fully functioning virtual model of the water wheel, cams and counter weighted bellows.

DIGITAL PRESENTATION

Below are two images rendered from the final model of the furnace within the historic landscape. A cutaway shows the internal workings of the furnace while a landscape view shows the historic situation of the structure. This digital film set was also used to generate animation footage which was included in a short documentary film on the site.

LANDSCAPE
